If you consider yourself a fan of Saturday Night Live, (or indeed gossiping gals), you’ll remember this iconic sketch series known as the “Bronx Beat, with Betty and Jodi”. It features two middle aged ladies gabbing about their day-to-day lives, gossiping about their friends and gawking at unsuspecting crew members.
What could these two have to do with animal videos you may ask?
Well, it only takes a few seconds of this video of two chatty cats doing exactly the same thing to realize that they could very well have their own morning show!
Obviously, cats have no hinderance in meowing for food, water, warmth, or anything they may desire. They’re vocal pets for sure, but watching this video of Mossy and Stina, it’s immediately clear that they don’t just talk to us. It seems as if they rather enjoy talking with each other too.
Just how much it seems as if they’re having a good old conversation is astounding.
According to the uploader fo the video, they usually spend their time arguing with each other rather than gabbing, but here they seem to have some greater talking points. Mossy will grumble about something, before Stina responds. The pauses they take, and the tones they “speak” in seem so close to a human conversation.
This is unusual behavior for cats.
Research has shown that cats more often will use vocalizations for talking to people than to each other. Speculations have been made from watching cats that they began using vocal cues for human”care-soliciting”, or simply to get our attention. For this reason, these two felines being so chatty together makes them genuinely seem to be having a conversation!
Not to mention the way that they seem to be “responding” to each other.
In turn, each of them takes their moment speaking, before the other responds, and so on and so forth. They truly seem to be having some sort of gossipy conversation with each other. Could they be exchanging catty remarks about their owner who so diligently records their conversation?
They even seem to be whispering into each other’s ears.
These whiskered whisperers look like they even have a few secrets, or at least something they don’t want us hearing. As Stina lends an ear, Mossy leans in for a little added privacy.
Or…just a friendly tongue.
Maybe there’s less gossip going on here than grooming, but regardless, they do seem to have a sisterly relationship. They may bicker and argue, but at the end of the day, they are still two peas in a pod. Two, very vocal peas.
Or…maybe that’s a front for their secret sessions?
It seems that even among their grooming sessions, these two still share plenty of thoughts. Regardless of whether or not they are truly having a “conversation” per se, it cannot be denied that they are in some way responding to each other’s mews.
Either way, they’re definitely sharing feelings about their owner.
The way they continue to stare at, and seem to comment on the movements of the person taking the video, we can be certain that they’re expressing their thoughts around the human pointing the camera at them. Maybe they’re not so different from that old SNL sketch after all…
