Dog moms are incredible animals. They’re loyal to their puppies, and they won’t let anything bad happen to them — even when they’re put in a precarious situation.

A dog mama in California is the perfect example of this.

Sacramento SPCA workers arrived on a Friday morning expecting another usual day at work.

Just one more day until the weekend. Nothing could go wrong. But then, they strolled up to the adoption center to find a pit bull and her entire litter with no owners in sight.

Abandoning a dog and letting it fend for itself outdoors is already horrible on its own, but abandoning a dog and her entire newborn litter is atrocious. However, the pit bull mommy never strayed from her litter’s side despite the unpleasant conditions.

The shelter workers suspected that the family had been left there all night.

Upon further inspection, the pups were so young that the mother must have given birth right before being abandoned. None of them were restrained but were left with no food or water.

It was a testament to the mom’s maternal instinct to never leave her pups’ side. She could have upped and left her litter to save herself, but she stayed.

Sarah Varanini, foster care coordinator at the SSPCA, told The Dodo that it is usually difficult to find foster care for litters this large. Their original Facebook post reads:

“On Friday, staff arrived to the shelter to find a surprising sight:
An entire family had been abandoned on our property: mama and 10 newborn puppies. Mama was not tied up, but stayed devoted to her pups and was found nursing them on a comforter. Finding a home for such a large group is difficult, but one of our amazing foster parents stepped forward and the family is now happy and comfortable. Each of these puppies will require vaccinations, microchips, spay/neuter and more. If you would like to donate to their care, please click here: www.sspca.org/donate”

This family found an excited foster dad to take them in. Said foster dad has been enthusiastic about sharing updates of his new guests on Snapchat, and they’re the best.

In two months when the puppies are ready to leave their mom, they’ll be put up for adoption as will mom herself. Fingers crossed that they all find their ways into loving forever homes.

If they turn out anything like their mom, there’s probably no need to worry. After all, who can say no to that face?

We’re glad all of these puppies are doing well, and it’s all thanks to their loyal mama who refused to leave them behind.
