The treatment of some pets is enough to make most animal lovers sick.

The mistreatment of the animals we care most about can be a hard thing to stomach, especially when we know what the right thing to do is. For all the bad people in the world who do harm to animals, there is always a good person willing to help. April Eells and her mom are two of those good people.

While driving down the road one day, a woman was coming up to a large overpass in Portland, Oregon when she saw something tossed over the edge. In an area as large as Portland, people sometimes litter on the highways. When the woman saw the object land, however, she knew that it wasn’t trash.

Initially thinking it was just a bag, the woman realized the gravity of what she just saw.

When she first saw it, she discounted the object as a bag. Getting closer, she saw exactly what it was. Someone had stood on top of the overpass and thrown their dog over the edge. Pulling over right away, she saw that the dog was a pit bull who was severely injured.

The woman knew that she had to help or the dog wouldn’t make it.

The woman called her daughter, April, to ask for help. April worked at a veterinary clinic and was the perfect person to help with the situation. After getting the dog to the clinic, they were able to see what was wrong. With such a significant fall, the dog needed a lot of work. It had a lot of broken bones and torn ligaments that required surgery.

Naming the dog Hank, the family started a fund to raise money for the costly operations.

Surgery is never a cheap thing! With all of the problems that Hank had, it would require a lot of work to get him back to his normal self. After spending some time with the newly named Hank, the family knew that he fit in perfectly with them. Deciding to adopt him, he was officially part of the family!

Hank was more than just a dog to April.

April Eells had a special connection to the dog for other reasons as well. The dog who was thrown from a bridge acted as a symbol for April’s daughter. The previous year, April’s daughter had attempted suicide by jumping off of a bridge. Hank was a survivor from the fall, just like her daughter.

The connection kept them motivated and inspired.

With the costs of surgery looming, the family knew that they were going to get Hank the help he needed.

“So, we can’t just give up on him,” April told KPTV. “They both have made it. And my own daughter had surgery again today and he had surgery last week, so I just feel like they just for whatever reason… there’s this parallel and he came into our lives for a reason, and my mom just said we’re not giving up on him.”

Finally, they raised enough money and were able to get Hank all fixed up!

Nowadays, Hank is a survivor and part of the family. From tough beginnings to loving endings, sometimes dogs (and humans) just need a little bit of love.
