When it comes to pets all pet owners will tell you that their furry friends are family. Being a family means that you will protect them at all costs.

Lost dog

Nia Morgan’s worst nightmare came true after she left her doodle, Zorro, in the care of a pet sitter from the popular site, Rover.com. She trusted the site to find a caring, compassionate sitter for her dog while she was away for a week on vacation. However, she came back to find out from the sitter that Zorro was gone.

Nia claims that her missing dog is not lost but stolen.

Growing suspicion

Nia was skeptical when the pet sitter told her how Zorro went missing.

When Nia returned from vacation, the dog sitter informed her that her beloved dog had bolted from the car and went missing. Nia never believed her story.

Always by her side

“I’ve been working from home for the past year and a half and he is with me every single day. You can open your car door even your front door and he won’t bolt…even if there is another dog around he always stuck close to me.”

Nia decided to do her own investigating.

She was shocked to find out that the woman she hired to take care of her dog had a lengthy criminal record. She found articles detailing the pet sitter’s criminal past including theft, kidnapping, and holding someone hostage. Many of us are wondering how someone with this background could be trusted to take care of animals.

Informing the company

Rover.com called the situation ‘troubling.’ The company was shocked that the sitter’s criminal history didn’t show up on a background check. Another disturbing detail that Nia uncovered was that the sitter had posted a ‘dog for sale’ ad on Craigslist long before she was caring for Zorro. This led Nia to believe there could have been a plot in the works all along.

Searching for her dog

Flyers with Zorro’s photos went all over social media and were also posted at dog parks across the country. When a woman at a dog park in New Jersey spotted a dog that ‘perfectly matched’ Zorro’s description, she contacted local authorities. This was more than 800 miles from where Zorro went missing. Police think a couple in New Jersey inadvertently bought a stolen dog that went missing five months ago.

“We need to meet the dog and just figure out if this is in fact the dog because if not we can rule it out and if it is…case closed. – Detective Marc Glantschnig from the Paramus Police Dept.

Authorities are asking anyone who knows the couple with the dog matching Zorro’s description to contact them. They also want them to know they are not in any trouble.

“I’m hopeful that it’s him.” Nia told Inside Edition

Everyone knows that losing a pet is like losing a family member and hopefully with the public’s help, Zorro can be reunited with his loving owner, Nia.
