One of the most unique and intelligent groups of animals are cephalopods.

Cephalopods are some of the smartest, weirdest, and coolest animals out there. Squid, octopus, and cuttlefish are all cephalopods. Wikipedia says:

Cephalopods are widely regarded as the most intelligent of the invertebrates, and have well developed senses and large brains (larger than those of gastropods).[8]

If you ever get a chance to see an octopus in action, it will prove just how smart they are!

From color changing to opening shells, an octopus can outsmart most of their prey and predators.

Some of the crazy things that scientists have tested with octopus include solving problems, navigating mazes, and remembering solutions. This sort of thing is useful when you need to find a way to open up a clam or hide from a shark!

One of the cool things that octopus can do is morph and fit their body into almost anything.

Since the only hard part of an octopus is their beak, they can fit themselves into almost any shape! This allows them to get around sea floors and hide in any hole that they can find. It also means that they can fit through a tiny opening smaller than the size of a quarter!

One octopus was caught on video doing just that.

In an incredible video, fishermen on a boat accidentally caught an octopus in their nets. Most people will release the creatures back into the water and that’s what these people did. Instead of just throwing it over, they decided to test what they had heard about the squishy cephalopods.

Putting it on the bottom of the boat, they placed it near a hole about the size of a quarter.

The hole was designed to let water flow out of the boat so it didn’t have to be large. If it was too large, you could lose things into the ocean if you dropped them by accident. Looking at the hole and the octopus, it’s apparent there’s no way this creature can fit through that little space.

One of the guys says it can make it through and the other doesn’t think so!

As we watch the video, we see the huge octopus slowly squeeze different pieces of its body through the impossibly small hole. After a little bit, it looks like it might be stuck! Then, like a tube of toothpaste, it rockets through the little hole with the rest of his body.
