These adorable, frustrating, wonderful creatures are never going to stop acting like we’re just living in their world. In fact, some of them have decided just to move right in with us uninvited.
Stephanie Holcomb started the Facebook group “My house, not my cat” in 2016 after seeing similar memes pop up online of cats invading people’s houses. Now, there are over 20,000 members.
Take a look at 55 of the funniest photos of people getting adopted by cats – or at least giving them a free place to crash when the cat decides it’s in the mood.
1. Death glare
This cat is clearly wondering why there’s a human in the place where he’s planning to hang out.
It turns out that while the homeowner thought the cat was a stray, he simply lived down the street and was looking for some bonus real estate.
He ended up moving in in the end.
2. Bra Buddy
It turns out Buddy has owners, but he enjoys wandering into multiple apartments in his spare time.
No word on whether or not he’s strictly a lingerie cat or if he’ll sit on couches too.
3. Peek a boo
But we have no doubt it proceeded to get cozy despite there being a photographer on the other side.
4. Garage cat
So now he’s the 7th and gets spoiled out in the place where he prefers to chill.
5. Cat scratch(er) fever
We might be amused by a new cat making itself at home, but we don’t know how the resident cat felt when it got a whiff of a stranger on its scratching pad.
6. Ginger invasion
Luckily, he just lived downstairs and got back to his mom. It seems he climbed the deck and came in through the window.
Maybe the downstairs sink already had too much cat hair.
7. Who does this guy think he is?
The invader is on the windowsill and clearly interpreting that open window as an invitation.
8. Popping in for a quick bath
It’s nice of him to stop by just to splay out on the couch and lick himself.
Cats are so polite like that.
9. Copilot
The cat doesn’t look too crazy about the situation either.
10. Having friends over
But Toby lives next door and the two friends like to lounge around together every now and then.
11. Anybody home?
Our first question is: who leaves their door open like that? You’re basically asking for cats.
12. Open door policy
So he just waltzes right in whenever possible.
The funny thing is that the neighbor inherited the couch from Max’s mom – so many he just feels like he can visit his old furniture whenever he wants.
13. A place to lay her head
That’s pretty generous since it’s unclear where that cat has been!
At least her collar indicates that she belongs to someone part-time.
14. Free gargoyle
And free decor is always nice. Unless, like Nico, it likes to taunt the indoor cats that live there.
15. Chair share
Her neighbor’s cat decided to meow at her door until it was let in and sleep on all the chairs.
Hey, at least you don’t have to feed it or clean a little box. It’s a timeshare cat with all the benefits!
16. First-floor living
This person also started giving their visitor turkey slices – so now she’ll never leave!
17. Just here for the free food
But C-lite has no interest in coming inside, only being fed and given furniture to enjoy on the catio.
18. Hello, I’m your new cat
She had never even seen him outside before.
Did you know you could get adopted by a cat against your will?
19. The cat that comes when called
He ran right into the house and started eating.
After trying to track down his owner to no avail, the house has a new cat.
20. What’s that noise?
“This handsome fella was clearly living in my house, without my knowledge for a while. My cat is a Turkish Van and has a very distinctive, deep and loud meow. I started hearing a different meow, for 10 days I thought I was going crazy. Then I spotted this…”
We’d like to think we would know if a non-resident cat was living in our house, but apparently these things happen!
21. One cat, two cat, red cat, new cat
The cat in red, not so much. But it doesn’t seem to be bothered by its new digs.
22. Switching families
What cats want, they get!
Now this one sits in its new home hogging the bed AND the TV!
23. I forgot my key
Actually, it looks like flirting was its first choice and now it’s just trying to glare its way in.
No news on if he was successful.
24. When the wife’s away…
Actually, he didn’t even notice since he had been at work.
It turns out cat doors work a little too well.
25. I’ll follow the sun
And the owners just let him do it…so long as their own cat isn’t around.
26. So sneaky
Normally Sir Titus doesn’t really like the man in the house, but right now he’s cleaning up some chicken, so he’s ok.
27. Bathing buddies
It just insists on social distancing, which is of course the responsible thing to do.
28. Pet me!
But it eventually went one step further when it decided it should be allowed inside.
As you can see, it’s a nice place for a cat – and that’s because some already live there. And they were NOT amused.
29. Nap invader
Once lockdown started after the pandemic, it decided it didn’t want to wait for the humans to come out and give it attention anymore.
30. Do you know what this house needs? More cat
Something tells us it’s not a cat-friendly house, though they’ll be forced to make that declaration clearer.
31. In the bubble
He would simply stop by sometimes and sleep wherever looked most comfortable to him that day.
Smokey was banned from visiting during the lockdown, but he never really got the memo.
32. Norwegian Couch Cat
It lives in the neighborhood but has decided to spend most of its time in its new chosen residence.
So much for making a thoughtful and educated decision about adopting an animal!
33. They’re multiplying
“I went to my kitchen to get my washing out of the machine and feed my cats, but walked into five cats in my kitchen. I only have three!”
34. But I match!
She looks like she’s trying to fit into a still life painting.
35. Hey, what’s up?
And that cat decided to hop right on the bed and then had the nerve to look at the homeowner like they were interrupting its nap.
36. Tense situation
The one in the box, obviously.
And you can tell by the reaction of the resident cat, which looks like it’s about to get its claws out.
37. Even the dog is confused
We can definitely see the dog’s surprise since he’s never seen that cat before in his life.
We’re not sure if the look on the cat’s face is one of great regret for wandering into the wrong house or just a bad attempt at trying to act like nothing weird is going on.
38. Catteries not included
It turns out this cat was wandering by and realized there was something really satisfying to destroy.
You’re not going to find that kind of quality entertainment outside.
39. Hey, do you mind?
What do you do at this point? Ask to trade chairs?
40. Jeepers, creeper
We know who’s craving some cheese sticks and a margarita.
Ok, well it’s us, but it’s also this cat.
41. Open this door!
We’re not sure how it all panned out, but it looks like he’s not willing to ask a third time.
