We all like to think that cats and dogs hate each other. There’s even a phrase that indicates that, “Fighting like cats and dogs.” But more often than not, our closest furry companions really love each other.

You might even see this in your home. But it’s especially true when baby animals are involved. You wouldn’t believe how sweet and tender cats and dogs can be when they’re tending to puppies and kittens.

A special foster

Stacee Jones has fostered plenty of animals in her day. But she knew she was meeting a special creature when she found a nursing mother dog behind a dumpster. Sadly, her puppies were nowhere to be found.

Another emergency

The rescue called Jones and asked her if she could take on another project in addition to the dog. Three newborn kittens had lost their mom. These sweet babies were going to have to be bottle-fed.

A wild idea

That was going to be a lot of work. But then, Jones had an idea. Why not try to get the mother dog to take care of the three kittens? It was a long shot, but it was worth a try.

Seeing if it’d work

Jones explained the situation to The Dodo: I was very careful. I sat down next to the mama dog and sat down with one kitten. I slowly showed her the kitten to see how she’d react. I was afraid maybe she’d growl or would not take [it] very well. [sic]

Feeling some nervous

There were plenty of things that could’ve gone wrong in this situation. For that reason, Because Jones felt nervous. She kept a close eye on all of the animals so she could separate them if something happened to go wrong.

A miracle occurred

Suddenly, Jones was very relieved. She saw that the pup and one of the kittens were getting along well. She said about the dog, “She took to the first kitten right away. She licked him.”

What a good mother

Jones said the pup was a great mother immediately. She claimed, “She laid right down and nuzzled them toward her. She let them nurse. It was very motherly. She knew what to do right away.”

Jones was shocked

Of course, Jones was very happy with this development. She wanted the kittens to survive but she also wanted the mother dog to feel comfortable. She was so happy with how things worked out that she even started to cry.

A few wise words

Jones told The Dodo more about the situation. She said, “I was like, ‘This is so beautiful.’ I’ve never personally seen anything like this. It all came together so quickly as though it was meant to be.”

A new family

And the little family formed just like that. The mom dog continued to take care of the little kittens with love. Jones stated, “She took to them on day one and loved them like her own. It’s so heartwarming. They both needed each other, and they’re healthy kittens because of that.”
