Just because it’s Mother’s Day doesn’t mean moms actually get to take the day off from taking care of their kiddos. That’s especially true if they’ve given birth to curious little heathens who are always rushing headfirst into a whole heap of trouble!

But, playing the role of hero is all part of being a good mom, and it doesn’t matter if they happen to be a little bit on the hairy side.

Just ask this mama bear what being a good mom is all about. She didn’t hesitate to act when her baby cub did a cannonball right into the water!

Moms are always hard at work taking care of their kiddos, and sometimes that means they have to suffer through all the baby drama, toddler tantrums, and constant whining that comes with raising a mini version of themselves.

Of course, none of that can ever overshadow all the cuddles, love, and laughter that comes with the job!

It was exactly that sort of joyful drama that Betsy Sommerfeldt witnessed when she spotted a wild mama bear and her cubs going for a nice little walk at a marina in Lake Tahoe, California.

Betsy noticed that while the mama bear was in the front leading the pack, one of her cubs decided to hang back and get himself into trouble.

Like all curious kids, this baby bear was probably wondering what would happen if he could squeeze himself between the railings at the edge of the water. He got wet, of course.

But what he didn’t expect was the danger that came from not being able to climb back up to safety!

Mama bear, on the other hand, didn’t seem too worried about her cub’s errant behavior.

“I thought that baby was going to drown but Mama climbed that fence and went right down to the water. I was rather amazed how fast she reacted when she noticed one of her babies gone.”

After the cub fell into the water, Besty immediately called 911, just in case things took a sad turn.

However, by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Fighters Association showed up on the scene, mom was expertly handling every part of the rescue all by herself.

“The mother bear was determined to save all three of her cubs herself and ensure that they see tomorrow by continually swimming each one to safety! Firefighters were called to the scene for a separated cub that the mother was able to coax into the water and swim it to safety.”

After snatching her curious cub out of the water, mom swam to the closest shore, with her cub tightly clinging to her back.

That presented a problem, however, as her two other babies were patiently waiting for her on the other side of the marina.

So, she swam back across the water to fetch them, too. Problem solved!

Besty Sommerfelt, who witnessed the whole thing, wrote on Facebook that watching the cub fall helplessly into the water was pretty traumatic. She thanked the firefighters for coming out on such short notice.

“Thank you for coming out. I guess Mama knows how to watch after and rescue her babies without any help. I witnessed the whole thing from Cove East and saw the baby fall in. So traumatic.”

While it may have been traumatic for onlookers to see a baby cub flail around in the water, for this mama bear, hauling her ornery little ones back to shore was all in a day’s work.

As usual, it was a mother’s love that saved the day! Betsy went on to say:

“It was an incredible thing to witness. Mom was very confident. She knew just what to do.”
