Dogs are loyal, loving, and smart animals – the fact that anyone could ever hurt or neglect them is absolutely heartbreaking. Sadly, people do.

The Dodo recently shared a rescue story of a pit bull in New York. The story itself is hard to hear, however, the happy ending will restore your faith in humanity. Pit bulls tend to get a bad reputation, however, most people don’t even know that ‘pit bull’ isn’t really a breed at all.

According to Pit Bull Rescue Central, “‘Pit Bull’ is NOT a breed. It’s a generic term often used to describe all dogs with similar traits and characteristics known to the public as ‘pit bulls.’ When we use the term ‘pit bull’ here, it should be understood to encompass American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and mixes of those breeds.”

Despite the multiple breeds under the umbrella category of ‘pit bulls,’ this group of loving dogs are being pigeonholed into a very misleading classification.

The Dodo’s rescue story is just another example of a pit bull being mistreated, but thankfully, it was because of a jogger that she was given a second chance at life. The jogger was on their routine run when they heard barking in the woods. What was even more strange was that it was around 9 or 10 pm.

The jogger continued on their run, thinking it was odd that a dog would be in the woods at that time of night. After returning home and going to sleep for the evening, the jogger woke up the next day and decided to go back to the same spot.

When the jogger returned to the woods, his heart broke when he found the pit bull tied to a tree.

The jogger didn’t hesitate to call for help – so, the help of the New York Bully Crew was enlisted. Craig Fields, the founder of the New York Bully Crew, received a call on the organization’s hotline about the poor, tied-up dog. One of their trainers happened to be in the area, so they immediately rushed over. An hour and a half later, Craig arrived.

During the hour and a half that the trainer was with the dog, she wouldn’t let him get near her. The terrified girl was absolutely petrified of humans, that was clear. Not to mention, whoever left her there made it a point to hide her in thick brush – it was a devastating sight. Craig knew that the only way to get her to relax was to approach her as calmly as possible.

Stocked with hamburgers and sandwiches, Craig and team tried to coax the dog to approach them.

With reluctance, the dog started to eat some food and began to relax a little bit. As she became more calm, Craig was able to slip a lead around her neck. Still very scared and very confused, she decided to trust the rescuers and go back to the truck with them. Craig then took her to his house to settle down and decompress.

The first day in Craig’s home, he took her for a walk and she began to realize that she could trust him a little bit more. She wagged her tail and panted with a smile. The second day, Craig was finally able to start petting her with his elbow – he says doing that in the beginning of a relationship with a dog is better than using a hand, since often hands are used to hit them.

It was after being showed a little bit of affection that she really began to open up out of her shell – she was named Llana.

Now, Llana is nothing but smiles all of the time. All she needed was someone to love her and show her that she’s safe. Craig continued to foster Llana for some time before she was officially adopted by a couple named Josh and Shannon Handler. Llana has even bonded with her new sibling Ruck.
