Dogs can make a variety of sounds, not just barks.
When we were kids, we were taught that dogs bark, and our parents imitate this ‘woof’ or ‘arf’ sound. We thought, “maybe that’s how all dogs sound like,” only to be surprised when we have our pet dogs.
We discover how they make lots of sounds that are both surprising and funny. But each sound they make has an underlying meaning to it. After all, that’s how they communicate with each other.
Barking, for example, could mean different things.
Dogs bark because they want to catch your attention; maybe they want something from you, like playing with them or giving them some treats? They also bark when they know something is wrong, like if there’s a burglar or anything suspicious outside or an emergency.
But aside from barking, they create other sounds to express their emotions. For one, they whimper when they feel sad or in pain. They give out a short growl if they don’t want to be disturbed or if they’re getting agitated and annoyed. That’s their warning for you to stay away.
One sound that is also common among dogs is howling.
You would often witness this from Huskies, a breed that is a close family to wolves. Like wolves, they howl to communicate by imitating sounds and howling them back and forth. This is why we often see videos of Huskies that can “talk” because they are trying to mimic how humans speak.
This dog’s video went viral not only because of her howl but with her vibrato.

Cassie was rescued by her owner Megan and was already very vocal then.
One thing Megan noticed about her as a puppy was that she sounded like she was singing. This gave her an idea to teach Cassie something unique.
She taught Cassie to howl whenever she commanded “sing a song,” and that little pup would instantly howl. Now that she’s a big girl, her talent went up a notch.
Megan howled at her, and then Cassie gave out a howl but with vocal vibrations!
I envy her vocal prowess, and so do many others on YouTube. They were also amazed by her vibrato. One commenter said it was “a perfect B flat,” while another compared her vocal ability to Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. Wowza!
It’s never too late to teach your dog the same thing. While there are some common breeds that howl or sing (like Huskies, Samoyeds, and Malamutes), all dogs actually have this ability. It’s just a matter of training them.
And if they really can’t? Well, at least you tried.
