A hitch of world-famous horses got tangled up and quickly showed how professional they are.

The Budweiser Clydesdales may be one of the most iconic teams of horses in the world. As such, they get to be invited to many events. Budweiser, the beer company, behind these horses, has catapulted their hitches to the limelight not only on events but their memorable advertisements as well.

But as with any other performers, these horses and their handlers are not immune to mistakes. In one event, for example, an entire hitch got tangled up in the middle of the show.

Their parade around the arena started well.

The main goal of their skillful stunt is to get the carriage into a dock. It sounds easy but you have to remember that horse-drawn carriages, especially with a hitch this big, can’t back up.

The whole team has to maneuver in tight turns using 32 legs. All moves must be orchestrated precisely to achieve what they need to do.

The expectant crowd held their breath as the wagon began making its round. For their first trick, the whole team sidestepped into an arc and turned the wagon in place. It’s pretty impressive especially when you realize how well-trained these horses are.

And they were about to prove it too.

As the hitch trotted around the arena, they made a rather tight turn where one of the horses in the inside line fell and got dragged. The whole team stopped in their tracks and the audience gasped in surprise.

The commentator was quick to calm the crowd down. He asked the audience to observe the conduct of the horses amid the accident. They were all standing still and calm. The commentator continued to narrate what was happening on the ground as the horse handlers did their work to fix the commotion.

People were quick to commend how the incident was handled.

One of them commented on the video:

“This is the result of proper training and handling and some very smart, trusting horses. I commend the Budweiser Clydesdale training program.”

Pair by pair, the horses were carefully unhitched from the yoke to give more space for the middle horses to stand up and recover. Fortunately, the situation was resolved without further incident, and it showed the kind of work these horses and their trainers underwent.

The Budweiser Clydesdales started as a gift then quickly evolved into marketing material.

The younger Busches surprised their father, August Busch, CEO of the brewery, with a six-horse hitch of Clydesdales to celebrate the end of Prohibition.

The horses were then used to deliver a beer crate to New York and present them to Governor Alfred Smith to thank him for his fight against Prohibition. They were used again to tour New England and the Mid-Atlantic, and in 1933, they reenacted the delivery of the first cases of beer to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Today, the Clydesdales remains one of the most enduring symbols of the brand and its heritage. They still appear in different events and come out on TV ads, especially for the Superbowl.
