When someone mentions the words “like cat and mouse”, it’s easy for us to imagine two people chasing after each other or a quarrel that seems to have no end in sight.

But a duo in Chile just gave the phrase a whole new meaning, and the funny thing about it is that they’re actually a cat and a mouse.

Benjamin Sagredo, from Punta Arenas, shared this hard-to-believe encounter with the animal channel The Dodo.

He said the encounter began when he started hearing some “strange noises” coming from his kitchen.

He didn’t specify what kind of sounds but we guess it’s a collection of shuffling, scampering, tapping, and squeaks. And when you start hearing those kinds of sounds, you know you should call your local mouse exterminator before they could do significant damage.

Good thing Sagredo owns a cat named Simon. And when you grew up with cartoons and children’s stories, you know that this is a rivalry that wouldn’t end well for the mouse – not unless your cat is named Tom.

It didn’t take long before Simon noticed what his owner was hearing.

“We didn’t know what it was,” Sagredo told The Dodo. “We had seen Simon playing with something under an armchair once, but we didn’t give it much thought.”

Cats are notoriously known for their hunting prowess even if they don’t need the skill at all. Urban cat owners are baffled as to why this instinct still takes hold on their beloved feline pets. “Gifts” like mice, small birds, frogs, and other smaller critters are often “offered” to humans, exhibiting their skills in taking down prey.

Even before, cats are kept by humans for this exact reason.

Their hunting instincts help trim down the pest population, especially mice who ravage through grain stores.

Expecting he’d see the same dedication and skill, Sagredo was optimistic that his mouse problem will soon come to an end.

That is until he opened the kitchen door and found Simon in a rather unexpected scene.

Simon was hunched over his drinking bowl. But he was not drinking. Rather, he’s sharing his water with another creature who happened by this watering hole. Perched on the edge of the bowl, the little mouse was taking small gulps of refreshment as you can see with the tiny ripples he’s leaving.

Sagredo couldn’t believe what he’s seeing.

“They looked closely acquainted. Simon was being affectionate,” Sagredo said. “I decided to record it. I thought no one would believe me.”

Simon, gentle as he is, even extended his paws to pat the little guest. The little one seemed unfazed, though, as if they’ve been friends for a really long time. If they go way back, Sagredo could only guess.

But there’s one thing he’s sure of. He’s not about to get rid of Simon’s friend.

Upon seeing Simon’s friendly intention towards the mouse, Sagredo couldn’t help but feel the same.

“I felt for the little mouse. I couldn’t dream of hurting him,” Sagredo said. “I named him Chefcito.”

At first, Sagredo moved their little guest outside the house to see if it was just trapped and was trying to escape. He was back several times, though, maybe missing his newfound friend.

Sagredo even shared that if Chefcito keeps on coming back, they’re going to have to adopt him.
