We’ve seen animated features where the princess was followed around by flocks of different colored birds.

But no one told us it can happen in real life. The only difference is, there’s no flock. There’s just a small baby blue-hued parakeet lost in the trees of New York City.

Brooke, who appears as @brooklyninharlem on TikTok, shares with The Dodo about her encounter:

“I’m walking and I saw by a tree this little blue ball. I was like ‘What is that? Is that a tropical bird?’”

Parakeets, a relative of parrots, are found mostly in the southern hemisphere where tropical forests are abundant.

Along with other birds of their species, parakeets are kept as pets because they’re beautiful, charismatic, intelligent, and can imitate non-avian sounds. Parrots are especially famous because of this skill.

So it’s strange to see this parakeet all alone amongst the trees of New York.

But in a true Disney princess fashion, the parakeet hopped over to Brooke as if she has a natural affinity to them.

The blue parakeet then jumped and clung onto Brooke’s arms. Brooke even admitted that she’s scared of birds and yet she didn’t send the parakeet away. The parakeet also didn’t want to fly off.

The solution to this conundrum was pretty simple. Or was it?

In the same video, Brooke hilariously shared when the realization of having a parakeet washed over her.

“So I get in the house and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I just made the biggest mistake.’ I have this bird in my house. I don’t know what to do, I’m freaking out.”

But that wasn’t the last of what she has to go through. After buying a cage with some perches, she noticed that the parakeet was a little bit standoffish at first. It might be because he has been out there for a while or he’s just trying to figure this new environment.

Brooke gave him his “me-time”, but every now and then, he would fly to Brooke because he was cold or scared.

He would snuggle close to her chest, pecking around to wherever his small beak could reach within Brooke’s hair. Sometimes, he’d just sink into the hoodie to warm his feathers. He would also perch on Brooke’s finger and sleep, providing her a challenge when she’s eating breakfast.

As their dynamics began to come together, Brooke had to reassure herself and her intentions.

Parakeets aren’t endemic to New York and so she knew that this little blue ball of feathers was someone else’s pet.

But since he doesn’t have a tag on his feet, she knew that this poor thing was abandoned. It was at that moment that she knew she had to keep him.

They got closer from then on.

With the pandemic forcing people to work from homes, this meant that Baby, now named by Brooke, can hang out whenever he likes even if she’s at work. He’d perch on her glasses like it’s nobody’s business. Or he would clutch on her laptop screen while looking at her with “Watcha’ doin’?” painted all over his face.

It only showed how much they’ve both grown into each other.

He’s become much more sociable and sweet, even giving Brooke some bobby head dances which she loves.

Brooke shared that keeping Baby meant so much more to her:

“This was definitely a tough year, especially in terms of going through job changes and personal changes. I’m very caring and loving, and having something to pour that into feels really good.”

They may have met by chance, but that moment felt like it was meant to happen.

Watch how this bird met someone who finally chose to keep him.
