A month ago, Swan Support received an emergency call from a concerned citizen about a swan who looked like it was shot in the head. The swan had a smear of blood on one of its cheeks and her mate was with her but could not do anything.

Wendy Hermon, the Operations Director, immediately took action and rescued the swan who was then sitting still on top of a clutch of eggs. She was taken to the hospital to be treated.

“Both swans were from a lake in Thatcham in Berkshire,” Wendy shared with The Dodo. “The female was sat on her nest when she was shot.”

It could have been a fatal shot.

The x-ray showed that a small steel ball is lodged at the base of its head and to treat the swan, the doctors would need to perform surgery on her. Fortunately, the operation went without a hitch, and soon enough, the injured swan recovered and is ready to reunite with his mate.

A criminal act

Swans in the United Kingdom are considered to be properties of the queen. Thus, any harm done to them is considered a criminal offense. The culprit is yet to be discovered, but the most important thing is that the swan is now safe and sound.

The sweet reunion

After being away from each other for days, the swan is finally ready to be back to the lake and back to her forever mate. The SwanSupport team wanted to capture the reunion, but they were definitely not prepared to witness such a remarkable moment!

The video shows the swan as she slowly went back to the water. She was clearly looking for her mate and when he saw him, she gave an energetic nod and quickly swam closer to him.

It was like watching a romantic film! In their own language of love, both birds swam towards each other. They turned their heads and did not stop until finally, their cheeks touched and everything seemed right with the world.

Their synchronized movements and obvious happiness after seeing each other again made the reunion really emotional and memorable!

“They kept on displaying to each other and chatting,” Wendy shared. “It was very emotional.”

The swans undoubtedly felt genuine joy after being apart from such a long time. Even if they don’t speak, their body language says it all.

“Releasing the swans back into the wild after receiving treatment is the best part of what we do,” Wendy shared further. “It is so rewarding, especially when you experience the reunion.”

The rescuers got emotional watching these two swans reunite. After getting a glimpse of their sweet reunion in the video below, we’re sure you’ll feel their overwhelming love, too!
