Bella and Sadie are two unlikely heroes in a health scare that Maureen Hatcher survived to now tell the tale. Her heroes–her two beloved dogs.
It was a normal day of running errands for Maureen up until she arrived home. Upon arriving home, she knew that she wasn’t feeling well and collapsed, falling face first. Her dogs, Bella and Sadie, knew right away that something wasn’t alright and wasted no time to run through the open front door and alert the neighbor. Luckily her neighbor acted on the dogs distress and hurried next door to check on Maureen.
When no answer came from within the house, the neighbor called 911.
When the paramedics arrived, they immediately recognized that she had suffered a stroke. Instead of taking Maureen to the emergency room, they rushed her to Baptists Comprehensive Stroke Center where she received new and cutting edge treatment.
Most patients who suffer a stroke as severe as Maureen’s would result in permanent brain damage. Since she was rushed to a stroke center instead of the emergency room, she received care that only a specialist can offer to clear the blood clot.
The treatment used dye to locate the clot in her body, then entered an artery in her leg to remove the clot that had cut off blood flow to the right side of her brain. This is such a new treatment that if this had happened a few years ago, Maureen would have been left with extensive brain damage.
Maureen was so lucky through this all but one detail stands out that really proved that there was an angel on her shoulder that day.
Her front door always locks behind her but that day it somehow stayed ajar. If the door would have locked then her heroes, Bella and Sadie, wouldn’t have been able to get out of the house to alert the neighbor and the neighbor wouldn’t have been able to get back in to check on Maureen.
Everything aligned that day to get Maureen the care she needed as quickly as possible. None of it would have fallen into place if it weren’t for Bella and Sadie knowing that their owner, Maureen, was in need of help.
“I had an angel across the street, I had a great rescue in the neighborhood, and the hospital.” Maureen commented in an interview on the incident.
The good fortune of Maureen is thanks to everyone who helped her. Maureen is so lucky to be alive and now has such a wonderful story to share with the world.
