Animal friendships are always a delight to witness. The sight of two different species co-existing and getting along brings so much joy and positive vibes, even to those who aren’t as fond of animals.

There’s just so much to watch out for: heartwarming exchanges, hilarious moments, quirks… there’s really no telling what two animal friends are capable of pulling off together.

One minute, they’re getting themselves into trouble and the next, they’re teaming up to help their human best friends at home. It’s a fun adventure when animal friendships develop under your roof. Your days are always interesting, you’re always kept on your toes, but you’re always right there for the sweetest moments, too.

Animals who are good friends become quite protective of each other, too. They support each other in their own ways and look out for each other – traits we can do well to mirror.

You can see these in Jax, the Bernese Mountain Dog, and Wally, the squirrel.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is described as a hardworking breed with an intelligent gleam in its dark eyes. Known for thriving in cold weather and being efficient farm workers, this sweet, tricolored breed is gentle with children, definitely great as a family pet.

Jax is definitely a sweetheart himself. While there’s no doubt he’s amazing with his family, you can see how tender he is towards his little buddy Wally, too.

Now it’s well known that squirrels love eating nuts but one interesting fact is these rodents happen to enjoy stealing nuts from other squirrels, too! Sneaky, sneaky. Apparently, they sit around and observe while others search for nuts and bury them. Then, they attempt to retrace the hardworking squirrel’s steps in hopes of finding the nuts. True crime, huh?

That’s why squirrels have learned to search for secret places to bury their stash in.

They can hide up to 10,000 nuts and successfully retrieve 4,000 by memory alone. As for the remaining 6,000? I guess that’s where the sneaky squirrels come in. Or poor memory.

That’s also why Wally chooses to keep his stash buried in his friend’s dark fur.

Jax’s physique and loyalty to Wally will definitely come in handy, too, in case any sly squirrel decides to have a go at Wally’s hoard.

You’ll love how patiently Jax waits as Wally starts hiding and rearranging the nuts. It definitely looks like a give and take relationship.

Despite Jax’s battle with lymphoma, he still manages to be there for Wally. In fact, Wally sometimes enjoys his snacks on Jax’s back!

What a good friend Jax is, so patient, giving, and understanding.

Animals are the best examples for how humans should treat each other. They can be so considerate and compassionate. It takes a keen and curious eye to witness just how incredible animals can be. That’s why animal friendships are worth watching out for and protecting.
