Animals sometimes do things that we humans feel are ‘weird.’ A good example of this is dogs getting angry at and chasing their own tails. But even if we humans aren’t sure why an animal does something, in their mind, they have a purpose — even if it seems strange.

And cats are some of the strangest and most mysterious animals to us.

Cats are some of the most entertaining and strangest animals out there. They’re adorable at times, but sometimes they can do really weird things.

The video below is the perfect example of this phenomenon.

This owner catches his cat barking like a dog out the window. The cat stares out at the window and barks and barks, and he truly sounds like a dog. If you closed your eyes, you would never guess that it was a cat making that noise.

And so, that’s already strange… but it gets even weirder once the cat realizes he got caught.

When he realizes his owner is behind him, the cat immediately starts to meow and act like a cat again!

It’s incredible to watch. One moment, the cat is barking his head off. The next, he turns around, sees his owner, and lets out a very casual meow.

So, what’s the reason behind this cat’s barking?

An article from LiveScience explains more about this cat’s barking. Professor and veterinary behaviorist Nicholas Dodman explained his theory behind the barking:

“While it isn’t super normal, it’s not unheard of for cats to bark. The arrangement of the cat’s larynx, trachea and diaphragm is similar enough to a dog’s that if they operate the machinery in the right way, it will produce a noise that’s like a bark.”

Dodman also said it’s possible the cat learned to bark from a dog.

“It could be that it’s imitating or ‘copy-catting’ a sound that it hears often. It seems to see something out the window; whether it is barking in response to a dog, we don’t know.”

Dodman also explained why he thinks the cat stopped barking when his owner appeared:

“It does seem like coincidence that it stops barking and starts meowing when its owner comes over, but what’s really happening is that turning its head reduces the energy going out through its airway, so the bark turns into a meow.”

The hilarious video quickly went viral, and many people took to the comments to share their thoughts about the cat’s barks.

One commenter wrote:

“As soon as it got caught it just was all ‘I mean meowwww'”
Another commenter hilariously wrote:
“This is the evidence that the cats are undercover aliens.”
