Although it’s common to find sea lions at zoos, aquariums, and even the ocean, not a lot of people know much about these mammals. For example, as part of the pinniped family, meaning they’re fin- or wing-footed, there are 33 unique species. That includes 18 true seals, 14 eared seals, and 1 walrus.

Something else to note is that sea lions aren’t the same as seals. Much of that has to do with the ears and flippers. Regardless, both of these mammals are masters at swimming. In fact, sea lions can reach up to 25 miles per hour in a burst. Because of the interesting way they maneuver the water, experts often refer to them as the “Angels of the Sea.”

Sea lions are also incredibly smart.

You might not think what appears as a breathing blob of fat would have any smarts. But for this mammal, that’s not the case. Sea lions are highly intelligent. That’s why they’ve long been used in aquatic shows to perform a broad range of performance tricks. They also have very little fear of humans, making it easy to capture and train them.

Their intelligence is even seen in the wild.

Cruising around all day looking for fish to eat can become tiresome. When they need to nap, sea lions will find a spot on the beach. Or as one viral video shows, anywhere they want. Females grow to an average of five to six-and-a-half feet long and reach between 200 and 400 pounds. In comparison, males grow up to eight feet long and can reach more than 1,000 pounds. Usually, it’s the smaller sea lions that people see.

That’s until a retired soccer player had the experience of a lifetime.

Joshua Phillips decided to spend some time relaxing on his boat. He headed to the Eld Inlet, not far from Olympia, Washington. While minding his business, something in the distance caught his eye. At first, he wasn’t sure what it was but as he got closer, he was shocked. On a boat were two gigantic sea lions.

We’re not talking just large here…we mean massive.

These two sea lions were so enormous that their combined weight had pushed the back of the boat all the way to the waterline. Making things even funnier…they looked at Phillips like, “What, you’ve never seen two sea lions going for a joyride on a boat before?” They were completely content just where they were.

Phillips worried there might be people onboard the boat.

Initially, Phillips had some concerns that people might be inside the cabin of the boat. But as he watched, it became obvious there weren’t. So, these sea lions had commandeered the vessel for their pleasure. According to other boaters on the water that day, this duo had been floating around for hours without a care in the world. What a life.

Of course, he had to upload the video to social media.

Otherwise, no one would believe the size of these sea lions. People who’ve watched the video were stunned. One poster commented, “How to explain this to your insurance agent…’ well, you see Bob, I bought the boat for romantic getaways with the wife and the bozo sea lion decided it was time to put some moves on a lioness…’”

This was no easy task.

Another person said, “How the heck did they get up there? Sailboats are hard for a small human to get on with all the riggings and lines.” That’s a good question but somehow, they did. Although not confirmed, a couple of people stated the boat eventually sunk. If nothing else, Phillips captured an incredible video and two massive sea lions enjoyed a leisurely day boating. It’s a win-win.

The funny part, a third sea lion was trailing behind the boat. It’s apparent their buddy wanted to join in the fun…but there wasn’t enough room. So, it had to settle on swimming.
